Some people think that the prospect of jail time and having a criminal record will deter a person from crime. However, once released from incarceration, the residual affect of a criminal record can actually have the opposite effect. A re-entrant’s inability to find work or even conduct a productive job search can be extremely discouraging and stressful and the results reflect in the statistics for repeat offenders.
Others believe that in most circumstances having a criminal record is a form of double jeopardy. Their thinking that once a person has paid their debt to society as declared by a judge or jury there should be nothing baring that individual from becoming a full productive member of society.
